    In my experience, it's harder to say no when you are asked personally, especially by someone you already know. Use the relationships you already have to build a strong organization! A general "broadcast" request does a good job letting others know that a need exists, but a personal petition may do the trick, especially when the position is a good match!

    Potential volunteers are often afraid that joining an organization will mean lots of extra work, and that once "in" they will never be able to "escape". To overcome these concerns, it may be helpful to give your candidates specific information about the level of committment required. Does it break down to perhaps just an hour or two each month? That doesn't sound too daunting and most people can spare the time. Also, let them know about your "hoped for" length of service. Could they pledge to help out for just one year? Quite possibly once a year has passed they will decide to stay on the team.
