With the realization that marching band is as physical as any athletic sport, many high schools are requiring students receive an annual physical to participate.  Those who do require this will have a specific form to fill out.  Some schools are also suggesting a cardiac echo screening. Sometimes, schools will negotiate with a local medical provider to provide a reduced fee for this service.

Our band program at Seminole HS in Florida requires a physical and it signed by the doctor, etc. It is part of our school system's (Pinellas County Schools) requirement to do marching band and color guard. They recognize the physical side of the activity and the athleticism it takes to participate properly. This is a yearly requirement. Many years ago in my teaching career I made this a requirement at my first program I taught at before the school system required it because parents were not declaring medical issues and diagnosis' of their kids for a multitude of reasons. My biggest one was when a kid had to be air vac'd from the field because the parents didn't declare the student had serious re-occuring seizures. The bottom line is it is a safe guard for the kids as their safety, welfare, and health are paramount in any student music organization.
